Online assessment
examina.io Secure exams online, in English or French.
For training providers, certification bodies, employers and schools that need to test people they can't put in one room. Build the exam once, send it to candidates wherever they are, check who is sitting it, and have the scores before you've closed the invigilator console.
Free to start on the Starter plan — two active exams and ten candidates, no card. Paid plans are priced in Canadian dollars.
- 01Designer, Manager and Client — in the browser, nothing to install

The online sibling of SmartExaminer — Designer files move between the two.
What it does
The exam room, without the room.
examina.io is the cloud version of SmartExaminer, the exam software Ratelsoft has built for schools in Nigeria for years. It keeps the same shape — a Designer to build the paper, a Manager to run it, a Client for the candidate — and moves all three into the browser.
It suits recertification for a regulated trade, a training provider's end-of-module exam, an employer's pre-hire test, or a school's mock paper. Candidates sign in with a code you issue, on examina.io or on a page of your own site.
-
Build it once
Write questions in the Designer, import a file, or have examina.io draft them from your PDFs, Word documents, slides or images. Several papers per exam, your logo and background, and your choice of what candidates see when they finish.
-
Know who is sitting it
Turn on an identity check before the exam, a live invigilator during it, or both. The browser logs tab switches, leaving fullscreen, copy-and-paste and extra displays — as evidence for a reviewer, not as an automatic verdict.
-
Scores the moment they finish
Every question type is marked automatically on submission. Results go out by email, into summary and activity reports, to your systems by webhook and API, or back to Google Classroom.
End to end
From a training manual to a results email.
Five steps, in the order you will do them. Everything happens in a browser — yours to build and run the exam, theirs to sit it.
-
Author Designer
Write questions, import them, or draft them with AI from your own files. Drafts wait in Review until an author accepts them; nothing is published unseen.
-
Invite
In the Manager, add candidates one at a time, by bulk import or through the API, and send your own branded invitation emails.
-
Verify
Optional face liveness and photo match before the exam starts, with the candidate's consent and a non-biometric review route.
-
Invigilate
A live console for your invigilator: webcam, audio and screen from each candidate. Screen sharing needs a computer, not a phone or tablet.
-
Score and report
Marked on submission. Scores, summary reports and result emails, plus a webhook when a candidate finishes and an API to read results.
AI drafting you can check
Upload the course material you already teach from. examina.io drafts questions from it, and every draft cites the passage it came from, so a subject expert can check it in seconds. Drafts sit in Review until a person accepts them. Your content is not used to train general-purpose AI models.
- Drafts from PDF, Word, PowerPoint, plain text, web pages and images
- Each draft cites its source passage
- Nothing reaches a candidate until an author has accepted it
- AI questions are included on every plan, from 10 a month on Starter
Fits the systems you already run
Run exams on examina.io, or put them inside your own product: issue a single-use launch link, show it in your own page, and get a webhook when the candidate finishes. API keys are scoped and can be revoked one at a time.
- Google Classroom, connected directly
- Moodle and Canvas over LTI 1.3 — available to institutions testing with us; ask before you plan around it
- Question export to Moodle XML and Canvas QTI files
- REST API, embeddable launch links and a completion webhook — documented at docs.examina.io
- Designer files open in desktop SmartExaminer, and back again

Privacy and honesty
What we promise, and what we won't claim.
An exam platform holds people's names, faces and scores. We would rather tell you exactly how that is handled than print a badge.
Data is encrypted in transit, access is controlled by role, passwords are hashed and actions leave an audit record. We don't sell or rent personal information. Identity checks need the candidate's consent and always have a non-biometric alternative. The service uses providers in more than one country, and the examina.io privacy policy(opens the examina.io privacy policy in a new tab) says where — if your organisation needs data kept in a particular region, talk to us before you sign up.

On the way, not here yet
Essay and long-answer questions, recording and playback of invigilated sessions, a locked-down secure browser, a mobile app and a Brightspace (D2L) connection. We will say so here when each one ships — please don't buy for them today.

Invigilation is human-led
The live console gives your invigilator the view. It doesn't replace them, and browser signals are evidence for a person to weigh, not proof of cheating.
Questions we get asked
Before you book the demo.
And the answers we would give on the phone. If yours is not here, it reaches a person.
01What question types are there?
Three, all marked automatically: multiple choice with one answer, multiple choice with several answers, and fill in the blank. Essay questions are planned but not available yet.
02Do candidates need to install anything?
No. They sit the exam in a modern browser. A webcam and microphone are needed only if you turn on identity checks or live invigilation, and screen sharing needs a computer rather than a phone or tablet.
03Can candidates take it in French?
Yes. The candidate's screens are available in English and French, as well as Arabic, Latin American Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese. Your exam questions appear exactly as you wrote them — we never machine-translate exam content.
04We already run SmartExaminer. Do we start again?
No. examina.io's Designer reads and writes SmartExaminer Designer files, so the question banks you built for the hall can be used online.
05Can we put exams inside our own website or LMS?
Yes. Use single-use launch links in your own page with the API and a completion webhook, or connect Google Classroom. Moodle and Canvas connect over LTI 1.3 for institutions piloting with us.
06Who supplies the invigilator?
You do. examina.io gives your invigilator a live console of each candidate's webcam, audio and screen.
Try it on a real exam
Set one up this afternoon.
Sit it yourself.
The Starter plan is free. Build a short exam, invite a colleague, and see the results land — or book a demo and we will build the first one with you.
